Pitigliano and Sourrounding |
Pitigliano, principal town of hilly Maremma, has very old origins dating back to the Bronze Age.
The Etruscan presence is proved by the necropolis and above all by the so called "sunken roads", ancient
pathways excavated in the tufo, a volcanic rock which is the main geologic element in this area.
Pitigliano, back in old times, belonged to the Aldobrandeschi family, later it fell under the domain of the Orsini
family until XVII century when it became part of the Granduchy of Tuscany ruled by the Medici family and later by
the Lorraine family. Pitigliano and its environment are very rich in nature , history and archeological sites and it
is the perfect starting point for unforgettable excursions. |
